Rent for 2009

Undergraduates

In 2009, the undergraduates are required to sign a 40-week contract.  Due to the ongoing room renovation, some residents may be on a 37- or 38-week contract.

Postgraduates

The contract for postgraduates is 45 weeks. For PhD students, most choose to sign a 52-week contract.

Payment can be made on a fortnightly basis via PaySmart. However, there is an initial one-off setup fee of $5 and a $1.95 transaction fee for transaction.

Up Front Fees

In addition to the rent, there is an upfront fee which is payable by both new residents and returning residents to confirm acceptance of a place. The 2009 upfront fees for new residents will be $1730 and for returning residents will be $992.

Registration Fee*

A once-only fee to defray the costs involved in the administration of new residents. Forfeited if a resident fails to come into College, having accepted an offer of a place.

General Deposit* -- REFUNDABLE

A once-only fee, set at the weekly fully-catered rate. If all contractual obligations are fulfilled, the Deposit is refundable on request following the end of a resident’s College career, after deducting any outstanding charges. Where a resident’s application to resign from their Contract is accepted, the Deposit is retained.

Card/Key Deposit* -- REFUNDABLE

Refundable on a resident’s final departure from College provided all cards/keys issued are returned. A $70 charge is also made for any rekeying caused by a lost room card/key. Other lost cards/keys (bike shed, security door key etc) also incur charges

Advance on Second Semester

All undergraduate residents are required to pay an advance on 2nd Semester fees equal to twice the standard catered single room rate. Fees for 2nd Semester are thereby reduced by $551. Where a resident’s application to resign from their Contract is accepted, this amount is retained.

Communication Fee

A non-refundable fee covering telephone connection and maintenanceand computer room facilities, services and infrastructure. Telephones are installed in each resident’s room. It is a condition of entry to the College that residents agree to have the telephone connected to their rooms. To make calls, a resident’s telephone account must also be in credit. Calls within ANU are free.

Unattributed Loss and Damage Recovery (ULDR)

This non-refundable fee covers the cost of damage to, loss or recovery of, property within College where such is beyond reasonable wear and tear and cannot be attributed to any individual or group. As an incentive to BRA to encourage residents to reduce damage etc, BRA is credited at end of each term with half of any monies left in this fund, calculated on a pro rata term basis.

Burgmann Residents' Association (BRA) Fee

Membership of the Burgmann Residents’ Association and payment of this non-refundable fee is a condition of acceptance into membership of College. This fee helps to fund BRA’s range of annual activities for its members.
