The College provides several forms of financial assistance to ANU students, resident at Burgmann.

Bursaries and Scholarships are funded largely from Burgmann's endowment monies held in perpetuity in the ANU's Endowment for Excellence Fund. They are awarded each year to those who can demonstrate financial need, academic merit and who have contributed, or seem likely to contribute to the life of college.

Paid Employment Under the WOBCO Scheme

The College employs a number of residents each semester in its WOBCO (‘Workers of Burgmann College’) scheme. Duties include cleaning, bar, room set-up and outside grounds duties. Some positions for first semester are reserved for newcomers to College and are advertised in O-week. There are also positions in most vacations to assist the College to resource its busy conference trade.

Other potential sources of income for Burgmann residents

Residential Tutorships. Advertised in September each year and offered to seventeen senior residents (undergraduates, honours or postgraduate students). Tutors receive a rebate on their fees and undertake academic, pastoral and administrative duties. In addition, some residents with outstanding academic records and teaching ability may be appointed as Academic Assistants in particular disciplines.

Residential Assistant Network Administrators. Advertised in October each year with different levels of fee rebate depending on the level of IT assistance provided.

The Charles Hawker Scholarship

This scholarship; not provided by Burgmann College, perpetuates the memory of Charles Allan Seymour Hawker - scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman. He served in WWI and then went on to become a distinguished scholar and leading figure in Federal Parliament prior to his death in 1938. The scholarship trust fund named after him has awarded over one million dollars in scholarships to twenty-five Australians since 1991. Selection is based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. It is available to Australian students undertaking a three or four year course of study approved by the Trustees at a number of institutions, including the ANU. Subject to availability, a scholarship winner at ANU has accommodation provided at Burgmann College. ANU Scholarships and Awards

  • ANU Scholarships. ANU offers a very wide range of scholarships, including for honours students, with additional awards from chemistry, engineering, forestry, law and music departments. See http://www.anu.edu.au/sas/scholarships/
  • ANU Accommodation Bursaries. Rental support for various categories of student, such as undergrads and postgrads, those with disabilities, emergency financial support. See ANU’s http://accom.anu.edu.au/UAS/182.html
