IT Facilities

Computer Room

Many ANU courses provide critical course materials and feedback online. In addition, many assignments will not be accepted in hand-written form. Having access to computers, the university network, and printing facilities is important to all ANU students.

Burgmann College provides all residents with access to the state-of-the-art computer lab. All lab computers come standard with LCD screens to reduce eye-strain and DVD-writeable drives for all backup and storage needs. Also all computers come with USB support for all USB storage devices such external hard disks and thumb drives.

In Room Connections

For those who wish to use their own computer, each room has a high-speed (100 Mb/s) network connection. Accessing data and websites in ANU is free of charge. However, accessing websites outside of ANU is charged at 0.6c/MB. (or $6.00 per GB)

Students who wish to connect their computer are assisted by the Assistant Network Administrators (ANAs). Regardless of the student's computer skills, they can be connected in a stress-free manner. Since it is a requirement to have up-to-date anti-virus software on connected PCs, Burgmann will provide students with free anti-virus software if it is needed.

Wireless Networks

Burgmann College has a number of wireless access points for those with suitably equipped laptops. This wireless access gives the same services as the personal network connection in any student room. Which means that:

  1. All ANU access, including websites, online systems, and public downloads are free of charge.
  2. Access to all non-ANU sites, such as Google, Hotmail, and other national/international computer systems, is charged at 0.6 cents per megabyte (or $6 per GB).

The college provides 4 main wireless access points, located in communal areas at ground level. These are located in:

  • the Dining Hall,
  • the Common/TV Room,
  • the main Computer Laboratory/Tutorial Room,
  • the Chapel/Café.

Students who own wireless routers/access points are allowed to use them. However, they are also encouraged to ask for help in their configuration so:

  • it prevents people inappropriately accessing their systems remotely,
  • it improves the security of the ANU and Burgmann networks,
  • appropriately configured, some wireless routers can provide increased range and coverage areas to the residential population without any undue sacrifice of security to the individual.

NOTE: Burgmann College provides the wireless service for convenience, not security. It is the nature of wireless systems to be less secure than their cable equivalents. Those who use their own, or the college's wireless systems do so at the own risk! Please do not engage in private matters such as online banking while using wireless systems.
