St Beryl Society welcomes new members during second annual high tea
On October 2, 2024, the St Beryl Society held its second annual high tea at Burgmann College, welcoming four new members; alumnus Matthew Lobb (1989–1991), alumna Jillian McSpedden (1972–1974), alumnus Robin Brown (1971–1974), and a new member who wishes to remain anonymous.
Greg Mills, Chair of the College Council and Board, opened the gathering by highlighting the founding vision of Burgmann College, which seeks to nurture socially conscious and egalitarian-minded thinkers, and recognising supporters like the late Dr Charles Archibald Price AM, whose initial bequest established the Burgmann Price Endowment, funding scholarships and leadership events to support future generations of students.
Mr Mills noted that such legacies exemplify the power of bequest giving in shaping the College’s future.
‘We would like to acknowledge Dr Price’s generosity also as Burgmann’s first bequestor. The Burgmann Price Endowment created from his estate in 2010 continues to fund both an annual scholarship and leadership event to this day—a testament to the intergenerational power and legacy of bequest giving,’ said Mr Mills.
Presentation of membership pins
The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of St Beryl Society membership pins to new members Jillian McSpedden and Robin Brown. Jillian and Robin have been instrumental in establishing and supporting the Equality Prizes, which are awarded annually in partnership with the indigo foundation to honor efforts in reducing inequality. Their commitment ensures these prizes will continue to benefit the Burgmann community indefinitely.
Remembering cherished supporters
The gathering also included a moment of remembrance for long-serving Burgmann College Chair and St Beryl Society founding member Len Goodman AO, and friend of the College, John (Jack) Harvey, both of whom passed away earlier this year, and whose support left powerful legacies on Burgmann College.
‘Len was the longest-serving Chair of Burgmann College, serving from 1998 until 2012,’ said Mr Mills. ‘Len’s generous bequest to the College’s Bursaries and Scholarships Program will remove financial barriers and enable future residents to experience a supportive Burgmann College residential experience alongside their tertiary studies.’
‘The Burgmann community thrives because of its members, and because of the care and compassion they have for their fellow and future community members. I thank all St Beryl Society Members for their support for the long-term vision and future of Burgmann College,’ concluded Mr Mills.
Attendees were entertained by Residential Advisor Jacob George on acoustic guitar and enjoyed socialising over a beautifully prepared tea banquet.
