Your first few weeks at Burgmann College and ANU
Move-in Day (7th of Feb)
Move-In Day is when you arrive at Burgmann College, collect your key, move into your room, and start getting familiar with the campus. Staff and student leaders will be on hand to help you find your way, answer questions, and support your move. You’ll meet some of the people you’ll be living with, learn basic practical information, and start turning your room into home. It’s a big day, and an important part of the Burgmann College induction process.
N Week (7th Feb to 12th Feb)
N Week is designed specifically for new residents, run by college staff and leaders. The focus is on helping you settle in, make friends from your cohort, understand how the College works, and feel confident navigating university life. You’ll participate in social activities, small-group sessions, campus orientation, safety briefings, and community expectations workshops. This is where many first year friendships form and where you start to feel like a Burgie.
Orientation Week - O week (14 Feb-20 Feb)
O Week is ANU’s university-wide orientation. The Burgmann Residents Association has a fun packed calendar for the week for all Burgmann residents. Here you’ll have opportunities to explore campus, explore ANU, get academic advice, and learn how university systems work. At Burgmann, there will still be social events and support running alongside ANU activities so you can balance settling into college life while discovering the broader university.
Timetabling Day (TBC)
At some point during N or O week, timetabling allocations will open up. Timetabling is when you confirm your class times, tutorials, lectures, and any compulsory sessions. This can feel confusing and overwhelming at first, so at Burgmann College we do it all together on our floors where you are surrounded by leaders (particularly academic network coordinators) and staff who can help guide you through this process.
Classes start (23rd Feb)
Classes begin the Monday after O Week finished for most residents. This is when you start attending lectures, tutorials, and workshops, meeting your lecturers and tutors, and getting your first assessments outlined. At Burgmann, we will give you a chance to find other residents attending the same classes as you, so you will never be alone in your first trips to class.
Weeks one to three
The first few weeks are about settling into routines — balancing classes, study, meals, the busy social life of college, sleep, and self-care. You’ll start learning what works for you academically and socially. It’s also common to feel tired or overwhelmed at times, and at Burgmann you will have plenty of support around you. During this time, we also hold our formal Floor Dinners, where residential staff join each floor for a formal dinner in the common room. This is a great moment to meet staff, and appreciate the more classy side of college life.
Commencement (5 March)
The big milestone event of your first month at College is commencement. Commencement is Burgmanns formal welcome ceremony for new and returning students. It marks the official start of your university journey and celebrates you joining the Burg and ANU community. Commencement is a formal dinner and celebration with speeches, awards and a band hosted at a stunning venue offsite, and typically all residents attend.
