Celebrating Burgmann Connections in London

On June 5, Burgmann alumni and friends gathered for a joyous reunion at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery in picturesque Fitzroy Square, London. Hosted by alumna Rebecca Hossack (1976–1977) and Director of Advancement Amelia Zaraftis the evening was a celebration of community, culture, and the enduring bonds formed by Burgmann residents across decades and the globe. Alumni from the college's earliest years mingled with recent graduates, each bringing their unique stories and experiences to share.

Rebecca's gallery, a testament to her vision and commitment to enriching her community, provided the perfect venue for guests to mingle amongst the exhibition of paintings by Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, the eldest daughter of renowned Aboriginal artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Gabriella's works resonate with the rich cultural heritage of her Country, providing attendees the opportunity to engage with the deep narratives woven into each piece. The cocktail-style evening included refreshments such as champagne, Victoria Bitter, and mini mince pies, evoking a sense of home for the Aussie alumni present.

Rebecca Hossack warmly encourages alumni living in or visiting London to consider her gallery a sanctuary for gathering and connection.

Thank you to all who travelled to attend this special evening together. We hope to see you again next (UK) Summer – and please bring another Burgie with you!

Peter Graves and the value of community

Each year, along the Homer corridor with a view of the Front Lawn, a student is living in Room 232. They may not know much about the name above their door. But alum Peter Graves (1972-1974) knows this room well: its thin walls, the sound of his neighbour Fran's laugh carrying through from Room 234, the particular quiet of late evenings spent writing essays, while the rest of the college hummed with life around him. Peter arrived here in 1972 with not much more than blankets and sheets. A few short years later, in 1978, he made a significant donation and became a Founder Fellow of Burgmann College.
