After an extensive search and interviewing process, Burgmann welcomed Dr Brenda Holt as the College's new Principal on 3 November 2025. Chair of Burgmann College Council and Board of Management Greg Mills formally announced Dr Holt's appointment in the following open letter to our community.
I am delighted to announce that Dr Brenda Holt has been appointed as Principal of Burgmann College.
Brenda has an impressive history of 24 years in senior leadership in residential colleges and is known for innovation, engagement, and developing people and infrastructure for the future. Her most recent tenure as Principal of an affiliated college was at St Hilda’s College, The University of Melbourne. As Principal at St Hilda’s (2018–2022), Brenda spearheaded a cultural transformation that significantly boosted applications, academic achievement, and student satisfaction. Her efforts also led to an increase in alumni engagement, philanthropy, and scholarships for disadvantaged students, her passion. Brenda’s PhD thesis, 'Global Routes/Rural Roots: Identity, Rural Women and Higher Education', was completed at the end of 2007 at The University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor Lyn Yates and won the 2009 Chancellor's Prize (Social Sciences).
Throughout her distinguished career, Brenda has demonstrated exceptional leadership in leading change, coaching staff, recruitment, and cultural renewal. She brings a deep commitment to deliver an outstanding and transformational student experience, significant experience in creating positive and inclusive residential culture, and helping university students build professional skills and connections.
Since Brenda left St Hilda’s, she has worked in year-long transformation projects concerning access and equity, governance and engagement at the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), State Schools’ Relief and The University of Melbourne. Her expertise and dedication has also been recognised through her roles as the former Chair of Heads of The University of Melbourne Colleges (2019–2021) and as a member of the National University Colleges Australia Executive. Brenda is currently the Chair of the Advisory Board for the National Association of Australian University Colleges (NAAUC).
