2013 CAS Hawker Scholarship recipients announced

Burgmann residents Alice Dawkins and Tristian Delroy awarded C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships.

Alice Dawkins, from Adelaide, is a second-year student studying for a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Asia Pacific Studies. She is a resident of Burgmann College and previously studied Chinese at Peking University.

Alice says being named a Hawker Scholar is an honour that encourages her to challenge herself academically while being an active member of her college and the university community.

'The scholarship has been a wonderful opportunity for me to set goals in my university life which I never thought were possible,' said Alice.

'The Hawker Scholarship generously funds my accommodation at Burgmann College for the next three years. I see this as a marvellous chance to be involved in a college that is dynamic in social, academic, sporting and music aspects,' she said.

Tristian Delroy, from Bellmere (near Caboolture, Queensland), is also a resident of Burgmann College. He is in his first year at ANU, studying for a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws, and after graduating from ANU aims to pursue postgraduate study in International Law abroad.

'Being a Hawker Scholar has enabled me to study interstate. As someone interested in international law, studying here at the heart of Australian diplomacy and politics is an incredible opportunity,' said Tristian.

'Having the financial support of this scholarship means I will be able to devote more time to clubs, activities and services at college and in the community. It will allow me to get the most out of all aspects of university life and, I hope, give something back at the same time,' he said.

The scholarships were announced by South Australian Premier, the Hon Jay Weatherill.

'Each of these recipients has already displayed a strong commitment to the ideals upon which the Charles Hawker Scholarship Memorial Trust Fund is founded. They are gifted scholars with enquiring minds and have already significantly contributed to the wider community,' Premier Weatherill said.

The Hawker Scholarship commemorates the achievements of Charles Allan Seymour Hawker, one of Australia’s most respected pastoral pioneers, who was also a soldier and a member of the Australian Parliament.

Undergraduate and postgraduate Hawker Scholars are selected based on their personal qualities and academic ability. Applications for the 2014 Charles Hawker Scholarships open on December 9 2013.
