Two Burgmann residents named 2019 CAS Hawker Scholars

2019 Australian of the Year Dr Richard Harris SC OAM presented four new Charles Hawker Scholars with their scholarship certificates at a ceremony held at St Marks College in Adelaide on Friday, 14 June 2019. Two of the four 2019 C.A.S Hawker Scholars are enrolled at ANU and are in residence at Burgmann College.

The two 2019 Charles Hawker Scholarship ANU/Burgmann recipients are:
• Miss Yasmin Poole, who completed her first year of Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of International Relations Degrees in 2018
• Mr Finnegan Rowbottam, who is enrolled in Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of International Security Studies degrees

The other 2019 Charles Hawker Scholarship recipients, Miss Sophie Ludbrook from Adelaide and Miss Kaidy Morgan from Port Lincoln (SA), are in residence at St Mark’s College and are studying Medicine and Agriculture (respectively) at the University of Adelaide.

Since 1990, the Trustees have awarded more than 6 million dollars to 126 young Australians, including a significant number from regional areas. The four successful 2019 candidates were awarded Hawker Scholarships from an Australia-wide field of 140 applicants. Today, each of these residential scholarships is valued at up to $60,000 over three years and is one of the most generous privately funded scholarships available to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Australia.

Burgmann environment fosters learning, says BRA President Ben Jefferson

In the last few weeks, we have had the good fortune to see the majority of residents return to Burgmann College under new COVID-safe policies. First and foremost, this was a return home. It was also a reuniting of friends, a resumption of acquaintances, and a shock to the system in a new, COVID-safe environment. But in addition to all these things, the return of residents to College was the restoration of an academic, collegial culture which I never truly appreciated until it was gone.

Alumnus The Honourable Kevin Rudd in residency at Schwarzmann College in China

Ms Dawkins, a Schwarzman Scholar, advised that The Honourable Kevin Rudd was in residence for 10 days at Schwarzman College hosting conversations with students and faculty. The focus of the program was on delivering workshops for students on ‘Politics with Purpose’, a rumination on the intersection of personal values, moral imperatives, and the limits of politics.
