Burgmann community creates new scholarship for rural, regional and remote ANU students

Heartwarming show of support establishes The Harriet Nixon Scholarship

On behalf of the Burgmann College community, it is with immense gratitude and pride that we announce we raised $160,000 to establish The Harriet Nixon Scholarship.

We warmly thank everyone who contributed. Together we have created an enduring gift of support for future students from rural, regional, and remote Australia.

Establishing this scholarship in Harriet's name is a truly fitting tribute to her legacy of service and generosity, and we could not have achieved this without our incredible Burgmann community. The scholarship awards $10,000 each year to support an ANU student who may not otherwise have the opportunity to live at Burgmann College.

The College extends its deepest gratitude to Harriet's family—Fiona, Ralph and Alicia 'Liss' Nixon—for their wholehearted endorsement and careful guidance in establishing this scholarship in honour of their beloved daughter and sister.

Fiona, Ralph and Liss wished to express their most sincere appreciation to the Burgmann community for the support and encouragement they received in creating The Harriet Nixon Scholarship:

We are filled with heartfelt gratitude, pride, and humility at the generous recognition of our dear Harriet and the support for The Harriet Nixon Scholarship.

We can just imagine the delight this honour would have brought to Harriet. As a most devoted advocate for Burgmann College and the ANU, she would have undoubtedly returned to a rural part of Australia to give back, sharing the invaluable education she was so thankful for and knew would shape her life. It was in the nurturing environment of Burgmann College where she truly flourished and created some of her greatest memories in her 21 years.

To our residents who graciously lent their time, influence and voices to encourage support for The Harriet Nixon Scholarship, we thank you for your invaluable contribution toward the establishment of this Scholarship.

The Scholarships & Bursaries Committee selected the inaugural Harriet Nixon Scholar, Evelyn 'Evie' Tilley, from Booborowie, South Australia. Evie was introduced to our community at the beginning of Term 1 to much excitement and a heartfelt welcome.

Burgmann College will continue to gather support for the Scholarship with a view to welcoming more students from rural Australia to our community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to you. The Burgmann spirit continues to amaze and inspire. Please join us in celebrating the success of establishing The Harriet Nixon Scholarship, which our community has made possible.

        With warmest wishes,
        Acting Principal Taryn Stasakova
