There was an excited buzz running through College as we awaited the arrival of a very special guest: former Prime Minister and Burgmann alum, His Excellency the Honourable Dr Kevin Michael Rudd AC, 23rd Ambassador of Australia to the United States (1976–1977).
His visit gave a much-needed burst of energy through College as residents powered through their final week of exams. His Excellency—or 'Kevin', as he asked to be called during his visit—spoke to residents during dinner, reminiscing about his time at College, including meeting his wife and fellow Burgie Thérèse Rein (1976–1977) in the Dining Hall, the spirited rivalries between the Homer and Barassi wings, and his former jobs at the College shop and cleaning the old stairwells.
'There was such excitement and a buzz around College, and of course Kevin didn’t disappoint,' said Acting Principal Taryn Stasakova. 'Such a brilliant orator, he was able to connect with our residents on their level, share some anecdotes about his time here, as well as inspire them to keep focused on their studies, their careers and the importance of service.'
After his speech, Kevin made time for photos with residents, answered their questions and offered encouragement, good humour, and advice.
'As a student who grew up in a small rural town and aspires to serve my country, having Dr Kevin Rudd visit Burgmann College was a profoundly inspiring experience' says resident Alex Ryan. 'I have followed his work on China for many years, so meeting him in person and receiving his personal advice on how to achieve my dream, serve my country and become an expert on China was an unforgettable and deeply motivating moment.'
Alex also had this friendly challenge to the former Prime Minister:
'Knowing the Ambassador's well-known passion for handball, it was only natural that I challenged him to a match. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a ball in time. I can only hope that Ambassador Rudd returns to Burgmann soon, and that next time, we'll be ready to settle once and for all who truly deserves the title of "Handball King".'
We were so grateful for the Ambassador's time, and that he could spread encouragement and inspiration to our residents. The College was honoured to gift him and Thérèse custom jerseys and we look forward to welcoming them back to College again soon.
