October 2024 Update from Principal McKenzie

As I reflect on my first nine months as Principal of Burgmann College, I am filled with pride and a profound sense of responsibility. Returning to Burgmann, where I once lived as a resident, has been a deeply meaningful experience. This College has always fostered growth, connection, and cherished memories, and it is a privilege to serve our community in this new capacity.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been engaging with our alumni. Hearing your stories about how Burgmann has evolved over the years—what has changed for the better and what has remained constant—has been both enlightening and inspiring. The spirit of Burgmann, with its commitment to community, inclusiveness, and personal development, continues to thrive.

I have also enjoyed getting to know my colleagues better, reinforcing my appreciation for their passion and dedication. Our staff’s commitment to supporting residents and alumni is truly remarkable, and I am grateful to work alongside such talented individuals.

Listening to our residents has been fundamental to my approach. Their insights are invaluable as we work to enhance the residential experience while safeguarding the unique aspects of Burgmann that so many hold dear. Our community's strength lies in its ability to adapt and grow while staying true to its core values, and I am committed to building on the legacy established over the past 50 years.

Key Updates

Courtyard Project

We are excited to announce that the long-awaited Courtyard Project is nearing completion! This initiative is the result of years of hard work from many individuals, including alumni, donors, Council members, staff, and residents. It will greatly enhance the experience for everyone at Burgmann.

Launch of The Harriet Nixon Scholarship

At our recent Commencement Dinner, I was honoured to announce that this year’s Annual Appeal will focus on establishing The Harriet Nixon Scholarship for regional, rural, and remote ANU students. This scholarship embodies our core values of diversity, equity, and access. I extend my deepest gratitude to Harriet’s family for their support in honouring her legacy.

Remembering Len Goodman AO

We mourn the passing of Len Goodman AO, our longest-serving Chair, who passed away peacefully on July 10. Len led Burgmann through significant developments during his tenure, including the construction of the Village, Griffin Centre, and Chapel. Our condolences go out to his family.

Resident Events

Sport at Burgmann

This year, Burgmann Sport has thrived, with our Disc team finishing second and our Tennis team securing first place for the third consecutive year. The Badminton team also excelled, and our Men's+ Soccer team was a strong runner-up in a competitive tournament. These achievements highlight the dedication and athleticism of our residents.

Arts at Burgmann

Burgmann Arts has had an outstanding year, with the Burgmann Band winning the Big Night Out for the second year in a row. Our choir secured third place, and the production of "39 Steps" received widespread acclaim. These accomplishments reflect the vibrancy of our arts community.

Christmas in July

This beloved tradition brought warmth to winter as residents gathered for a festive celebration. The evening was filled with laughter, song, and community spirit, making it a memorable event.

Burgmann Toga Party

Held during Bush Week, the Toga Party remains a cherished tradition, celebrating creativity and camaraderie among residents. It was heartwarming to see this spirit carried forward.

Inward Bound

Our participation in Inward Bound was both challenging and exhilarating. Teams faced tough conditions during practice, reinforcing the adventurous spirit that this event embodies. This year’s preparations continued the proud tradition of IB at Burgmann.

Advancement

Alumni Engagement

We are grateful for the ongoing support of the BCAA Committee, which plays a vital role in our alumni engagement programs. The Alumni Awards program continues to recognize outstanding achievements among our alumni, and we encourage nominations for the 2025 awards.

Our Burgmann Alumni & Friends Mentoring Program (BAM) connects residents with mentors, providing invaluable insights into career paths. If you’re interested in mentoring, please reach out.

Fundraising & Philanthropy

Since the establishment of our Advancement Office in 2021, your generous support has made a meaningful impact on current and future residents. Our fundraising initiatives aim to enhance our amenities and expand our scholarships to ensure inclusivity and diversity within our community.

This year, we are honoured to partner with the Nixon family to establish The Harriet Nixon Scholarship, which will support students from rural and remote areas. This scholarship aims to provide opportunities for those who might otherwise be unable to attend Burgmann.

Upcoming Events

We invite all Burgmann alumni and friends to these remaining events before the year ends:

- Opening of The Charles and Elizabeth Price Gardens: Join us here at Burgmann College for the celebration on Saturday 16 November at 11:00 AM. All are welcome!
