Standout Moments in Sports | Semester 1, 2026
Semester 1 has been a strong start for Burgmann in the Inter Hall Sport competition, with the college finishing 4th overall, a solid foundation that reflects the commitment and enthusiasm our athletes have brought to every sport in the year so far.
Term 1 welcomed two outstanding additions to the Sports team through the election process: Men's+ Whip Sean O'Sullivan and Women's+ Whip Eva McCutcheon. Both have already made their mark, demonstrating natural leadership within the first-year cohort and hitting the ground running with an impressive dedication to the team.
The undisputed highlight of the semester was our dominant performance at the Road Relay Gala Day. Crossing the line in first place was a true team effort, made possible by our incredible athletes and the work of coaches Lachie, Lily, and Jasper, a huge thank you to all three. After missing the top spot in 2025, this victory was sweet redemption, and a sign of what this college is capable of.
Touch footy delivered some of the most memorable moments of the semester, with both sides drawing enormous crowd support throughout. The Women's+ team produced an outstanding season, going all the way to the Grand Final in a blockbuster clash against fierce rivals John XXIII College, where they narrowly fell short in a hard-fought contest. A sincere thank you to coaches Ella, Amelie, and Katie for everything they poured into the side. The Men's+ team, meanwhile, rounded out their campaign with a comfortable third place finish, with their infectious team spirit, unorthodox methods, and the coaches' dress-up antics making them entertaining to watch. Thank you to coaches Oli, Henri, and Calvin for bringing it all together.
Badminton enjoyed another successful year, with the team claiming a well-earned 3rd place finish. A sport famous for producing the fastest projectile in all of racket and ball sports, our players took to the courts with the confidence of people who have either incredible reflexes, or they simply haven't looked up the numbers. A big congratulations to coaches Nan, Zac, Sybella, and Ava for guiding the team throughout.
Oz Tag proved a tough challenge on the unforgiving synthetic grass, but Burgmann faced it head on, claiming a solid 3rd place finish. At this point, ‘third man’ might just be our signature, but let’s embrace it. The sport was a genuine hit with the college, drawing plenty of enthusiasm and energy throughout the day, and if the buzz around campus is anything to go by, Oz Tag could well be making a serious case for becoming a mainstream sport come 2027.
Disc is one of those sports you must experience to truly believe, and the 2026 season delivered that in full. A challenging campaign saw the team finish 4th, but the real story lies in what the sport has done to our first-year cohort, who continue to play casually long after the season's end. The final matches were intense, raising a question worth asking the broader competition: can a sport this competitive continue to sustain self- refereeing? It's a conversation that needs to be had. Through it all, coaches Caspar, Emily, Max, and Katie were brilliant.
And finally, the Homer v Barassi rivalry has once again proven to be one of the highlights of the semester. Both blocks head into the break with a win apiece, setting the stage for what promises to be a fascinating contest. In a bold move at the start of the year, the Sports Reps commissioned a custom engraved trophy, and anticipation is already building for the moment it's finally raised in triumph. Watch this space.
To everyone who has made Semester 1 what it was, the players, the coaches, and the supporters, thank you. Burgmann Sport is nothing without the people behind it, and this semester has been a reminder of just how special that community is. The work continues, the rivalry lives on, and if Semester 1 is anything to go by, the best is still very much ahead of us. See you all soon.
