Euan Maclean's Mid-Year Report captures the beautiful contradiction that is life at Burgmann College. From lugging bar fridges up sweltering, un-air-conditioned stairwells during N-Week to dancing in the pouring rain at the St Patrick's Day mixer with Johns XXIII, Semester One has been anything but quiet.
We're excited to announce a new 1980s Giving
Circle, created to establish a full-fee Scholarship at Burgmann, commencing in
2027. Led by alumni Chris van Aanholt (1983-1985) and
Andrew Post (1984-1986), this Giving Circle invites 1980s alumni to make a
lasting difference by giving together. Having studied and lived at Burgmann
when university was far less costly, Chris and Andrew invite you to join them
in giving a regional student who could not otherwise afford it the chance to
live and learn at Burgmann.
The 55th Anniversary Back-to-Burg Weekend on 19–20 September was a joyful occasion, bringing together alumni, friends, and residents across generations. It was particularly special to welcome back those who had not returned in many years, and to witness the warmth of reunions between people who had not crossed paths since their Burgmann days.
Fifty years ago, Bill Ranken asked his mother Margaret Ranken if she would make a significant donation to Burgmann College and Margaret kindly agreed, making a generous Gift to name Bill’s room in the Barassi Wing. Today, Bill reflects on her generosity, his transformative experience at Burgmann, and why he believes young people should have the same opportunity, regardless of what they can afford.
This August, Burgmann Residents’ Association (BRA) made the decision with the support of the student body to donate $80,000 out of BRA’s reserve funds to the college. These funds have supported the purchase of a 12-seater college bus (Burg Bus or Bee-Bee for short [or long?]), the upgrade of the Common Room to better facilitate events through a lighting and sound system, and a donation of $10,000 to the college’s Endowment Fund.
