By Arts Reps Euan MacLean and Lily Elias
This semester for Burg Arts has been one of success and fun for all.
The year started with the annual N-week movie night, where many a friendship is made every year, and Lily and I spent most of the time dishing out milkshakes and popcorn bags.
O-week talent show was the first whole of College event, and as usual, it was a sellout show featuring the College’s best and brightest. Tom Henchliffe blew the socks off most of the College with his beatboxing skills, and as usual, the other performances proved what a high talent pool we have here at Burg!
IAC’s inaugural event, the trivia night, saw Burgmann not succeed in its usual fashion but have lots of fun nonetheless.
As the semester went by (quickly!), Burg competed in Debating, Chess, Theatre sports and 40 hours of film.
Debating saw Burg come second, once again, beating our ‘Thirdmann’ status. Grace Cox, competing alongside the Henchliffe twins Nic and Tom, earned Grace the nickname 'triplet', and Vice President Eloise Rudge lovingly oversaw the prep time and contributed as fourth speaker (talk about third-year involvement!).
In chess, Fergus Grave valiantly led his team into battle but unfortunately failed to show up at such battle, much to the ire of the rest of the team.
Theatre sports saw an outstanding showing from Burg. Much props to Elisa Ward for her effort putting it together and to the rest of the team who did us proud.
In 40 hours, the Burg team spent 48 hours of close bonding time producing a second-place-worthy (some might argue first-place…) performance.
Footage of Jett Austin dressed seductively with an umbrella over his shoulder and rain pouring down made the audience swoon at the showing night, and Ella Worley’s duck aficionado character still gets brought up around the dinner table.
The biggest arts event of the year also rolled around: Burgmann defending its title as BNO champions. A bit of green room drama, the loudest cheers of the night and some on-stage emcee controversies saw Burgmann retain its place in the BNO spotlight. Unfortunately, for this year, the BNO band saw the loss of its title, coming second to Griffin Hall. Whilst we loved Griffin, our very unbiased opinion tells us otherwise…
The events were undeniably successful, but so were the amazing Burgies who rocked up to cheer on their mates. The biggest crowd at BNO and a one-hundred-odd crowd at debating were beyond anyone’s expectations; thank you!
To all those who got involved in arts this semester, whether that was band nights at Le Chat or competitive events, we were so happy to see the effort and commitment we’ve seen at the start of this year.
Onwards and upwards for Semester 2!
