Semester 1 has been huge for Burgmann Sport, finishing third overall in the ISO competition; Burg ressies have been playing their hearts out.
The term began with the election of the two newest sports team members, our Men’s+ and Women’s+ Whips Emily Hay and Caspar Bosscher, who have been incredible additions to the team, helping us wash jerseys and organise different events.
Badminton beatdown
Our first official win of the year came from mixed badminton, where Burgmann smashed through to beat Bruce in a thrilling grand final. A special shout-out to our lovely players and to two amazing first years, Ava and Sybella, who stepped up to coach us to victory!
Face-off with John's
We had many other successes throughout the semester, notably our rematch with John's College in the inaugural Disc grand final. Although our residents did not take home the win, each played amazingly. Shout-out to our amazing coaches Leo Burgess, Max Dewhurst, Zoe Richmond, and Gretel O’Brien, alongside the many residents who painted signs (and occasionally themselves) in support!
'Secondmann' success
Burgmann also placed second in a multitude of other sports (goodbye last year's ‘Thirdmann’?). These included Women’s+ AFL Nines, which saw Burgmann go head-to-head with Fenner in a tight game. Or Road Relay, where our eight superstar runners raced varying distances along Daley Road against other colleges. In a gripping finish, Fergus Grave chased down a national runner from Burton and Garran Hall to secure second place.
Our final ‘Secondmann’ effort was the ‘pre-Commencement’ Lawn Bowls Gala Day at the RUC, where some very dodgy efforts from Johns' College were disputed, allowing us to secure second place.
Friendly Sport mixers
However, Burgmann ressies have participated in more than just ISO sport this semester. During O-week, we held a hugely successful mixer with Wright Hall, in which our ressies enjoyed the sunny weather playing both touch and disc, with a couple of icy poles to end the day.
Term 2 also featured an inter-Burg mixer, the renowned ‘Homer vs Barassi’ basketball game, and although it was very close, Barassi went home with the win that day.
Gratitude for the semester
We would like to end this re-cap with a little shout-out to all of our amazing coaches; their work organising trainings and teams for each game does not go unnoticed and helps foster the amazing sport culture Burgmann has today!
In addition, we would like to congratulate and thank all the residents who got involved playing sport. Whether it was your first time playing or you have played for years, thank you for getting involved.
Lots of love from your Sports reps.
