The Burgmann community uniting to support The Harriet Nixon Scholarship

(L–R) Fiona Nixon, Alicia 'Liss' Nixon, Director of Advancement Amelia Zaraftis, and Ralph Nixon

The Burgmann College community was honoured to launch The Harriet Nixon Scholarship Appeal to Burgmann families at the recent Burgmann Residents’ Association (BRA) Family Weekend Gala Dinner on 4 May 2024.

We are grateful to BRA Vice Presidents Joshua Borland and Oscar McAuliffe for including the appeal launch in their Family Weekend program.

With the support of the broader Burgmann community, we are establishing this scholarship for students from rural, regional and remote Australia in honour and memory of a remarkable rural Burgmann alumna, Harriet Nixon (resident 2015–2016).

Harriet’s parents Fiona and Ralph Nixon, and younger sister Alicia (Liss) joined Director of Advancement Amelia Zaraftis on stage to formally launch the appeal to a caring audience of 600 Burgmann family members.

Having access to a first-class education in a comfortable home away from home is something Harriet cherished for herself; she would no doubt have wished the same for those otherwise unable to afford such an opportunity. I urge those who can to support The Harriet Nixon Scholarship.

With the generous support of two dedicated donors we announced a matched funding initiative of $6,000 for Family Weekend, together with the treasured contributions of many Burgmann families we reached our matched funding target, raising over $12,000.

We have been truly heartened by the response of the Burgmann community since we launched the appeal.

We extend our sincere gratitude to every person who has supported us towards as we have now raised $65,000 toward establishing The Harriet Nixon Scholarship.

Establishing a scholarship for rural, regional and remote students in Harriet's name is a truly fitting tribute to her.

With your help, we hope to support future generations of rural, regional and remote students alongside their university studies, so they may go on to make their most valuable contribution to the world.

Please consider making a contribution to the Harriet Nixon Scholarship Appeal today.

‘As a family from regional NSW, we witnessed first-hand the transformative power of education and the nurturing environments that Burgmann College and the ANU provided to our cherished daughter Harriet,’ said Fiona Nixon, mother of Harriet Nixon. ‘Seeing her flourish, surrounded by extraordinary opportunities for personal growth, dedicated to community service, and developing lifelong friendships in a caring environment has inspired us deeply. Our wish is to extend that same valued support to other students through this scholarship.’

We extend our sincere gratitude to every person who has contributed.
